Totally Awesome Hulk #1 Review

Totally Awesome Hulk #1 from Marvel Comics -

There are mysterious monster eruptions occurring all over the world...Followed by the appearance of equally mysterious, humongous monsters! But Amadeus Cho, nineteen-year-old super-genius, is on the case. Well, sort of. Amadeus has gained the power of the Hulk, the legendary, unstoppable green behemoth that was Bruce Banner. Cho uses this power, with the help of his (also) super-genius sister, Madame Currie Cho (Maddy) to save humanity from being overrun by the enigmatic beasts. Cho can save the world, IF he can control the Hulk inside him...And IF he can control his raging hormones. Make way for Amadeus Cho - the Totally Awesome Hulk!

Greg Pak knocks this one pretty much out of the park. Cho is a zany, hormone-driven, girl-chasing, teenager with the power of the Hulk. This book promises some new Hulk mythology and, judging by the first issue, a whole lot of laughs. And Frank Cho's artwork...FUGHEDDABOUDIT!! It's gorgeous, insane and borderline PERFECT. If Gil Kane was the master of the human form, then Frank Cho must be the master of the idealized/exaggerated human form. Just check out this page from issue #1:

Now THAT is great artwork.

All in all, I find little fault with Totally Awesome Hulk #1. It's not taking itself seriously - it's light-hearted, simple, madcap teenage fun with some attractive characters, great art and plenty of the ol' HULK SMASH!! I suspect many of my generation and older may not dig it, but I think that I'm pretty into it. Boy, I sure was ready to lay some major hate on this book, but I just CAN'T!

RATING: 8 out of 10. Totally Awesome Hulk just smashed it's way onto my pull list.

Thanks for reading!

  1. After watching Avengers 2 I wonder if marvel will go with this version of the hulk for a solo movie.

  2. Hello Forgotten 5 Comics,

That is a cool name! Is there a backstory there? I'd love to hear it.

I feel the same way after watching Avengers 2. I think it would be a fun movie - I'd be excited to see the Banner/Cho handoff in a series of solo films. Hulk and Cho meeting and going on a few solo adventures...Sounds great. Cho's Hulk is definitely not ready to be an Avenger...Yet.

    Thanks for visiting!

  3. Hi Tex, welcome to 2016.

That Hulk art is great. That wouldn't look right on newsprint. I bet it looks better on paper than it does on my monitor.

    1. Hey Robbie!!

      Happy New Year!

Brother, this art is INSANE. If I could but that OA, I would do it in a heartbeat. Frank Cho and Lee Bermejo are now 1st in my mind when it comes to modern comic artists.

  4. I would like to see the hardcopy art for that.
The inked art is scanned, then the coloring, text and other effects are digitally added. Anyone who's used a typewriter understands what a joy it is to be able to revise text using software. In the olden days, comic book people would paste text using actual paste.

Just did a check on OA sales on ebay... Frank Cho pages go for more than Gil Kane pages. That doesn't seem right.
